This project involved the early scientific exploration of coffee preparation. Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, notably detailed his own invention for creating "perfectly good" coffee in his 1812 essay, “Of the Excellent Qualities of Coffee.”
It is uncertain whether his coffee-pot design was ever actually constructed or if any examples remain today. My task was to build a replica based on the descriptions and drawings included in his essay to evaluate its effectiveness. To do this I taught myself the craft of tinsmithing in order to be as authentic as possible. In the end the project involved a blend of 18th and 21st century tools and methods to bring the project to completion.
